Free Fall

Thanks to consummate blogger Brian Miller, I have been further inspired to write more with purpose in mind. I've been directed to two new meme's, Poetry Jam and One Stop PoetryUnconventional by graphically emoting I know, I just can't seem to help myself. My photos inspire my thoughts and sometimes, my thoughts inspire my photos. "Swim Swam Swum" was the prompt for Poetry Jam and Free Verse the theme for OSP. I hope this is suitable for both ~ it is my first effort ~ please be gentle. If interested, read below the poem for the backstory.

After silently quitting the football team as a sophomore in high school, my son, Huck, tried out springboard diving. [Hubby #1 was adamant that all of our children be involved in music, sports and foreign languages ~ never letting up and ignoring all complaints and excuses...including mine]. Diving became Huck's life, and in turn, mine. His grades improved, his confidence built and his circle of friends widened. Being a natural, in an extremely short period of time, he began competing with the best in the country. In spite of being in the sport for only 18 months at the time scouts started their recruiting hunt, Huck was offered, and accepted, a collegiate scholarship. It's hard to say what happened in his first, and only, year in Buffalo; however, he began a free fall of an entirely different kind. Those of you who have followed my blog know that Huck is an alcoholic like myself. In and out of the program now for a couple of years, only a few months ago we talked about diving. He shed a tear. So did I.

Blessings on this perfect Monday,

Karis

your prose set to a diving backdrop was well good enough, however against the backdrop of yesterday, today(1 day at a time) and tomorrows "dry time...extraordinary.completely related (21 years now),so enjoyed it.

Nice! Lots of energy, lots of layers. The use of so much rhyme and regularity puts it on the edge between rhymed, formal and free verse, but I think it still manages to fall within the definition with it's odd numbers of feet and syllables. Regardless, an enjoyable poem and a pleasure to read. Thanks for playing our game today at One Stop.

Stay tuned for more articles about free verse. We are featuring it throughout June. I think your poem today was beautiful and metaphorical but clinging to the idea of rhyme=poetry. As we go through the weeks, there will be more information on how to make it poetry without rhyme and even without meter.Lovely effort and thank you for linking. Gay

I love how this piece not only relates to diving but to the path that leads to freedom. Sorry to hear about your son's struggles.

In every AA meeting I attend, I 'see' your son...and you, Karis.

I really know nothing about poetry but pretend every so often. But I DO know how to stay sober! (And how to play a violin--grin!)

Thank you for your honesty, and sharing...
PEACE!

Great one shot you gave
Deserves a bit of rave
Like how you fit the words into the pic
Adding layers brick by brick

I felt so sad for Huck when I read this. I hope that his descent is checked by recovery and a will to dive into program. I don't know what happens either when the disease progresses.
